Today, I downloaded the Windows 8 Developer Preview and tried to install it to a VM using VMWare Player. Fail, fail fail. Won’t work. Google around for it– but it won’t work.
So I was forced to install Oracle’s VirtualBox to get the developer preview up and running. Not a big fan, but it’s good enough for now.
Suggestions:
- Enable 2D and 3D hardware acceleration
- Give ‘er at least 2GB of RAM and 2 cores– I went 4/4
- If you’re used to VMWare’s nice display integration, good luck
Without further ado, here are a few screenshots. I’ll reserve my commentary for later, but let me just say that I think Windows 8 has huge potential to bridge the gap between tablet and typical PC, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

When you're in the standard Windows desktop, don't you dare hit "Start"-- or you'll get the tile menu. Hover in the lower left-hand corner to display some more familiar options.
